Semaglutide is a modified molecule our bodies make, called GLP-1 analog. It works by increasing insulin production and lowers glucagon secretion as well as targets areas in the brain that regulate appetite and food intake. A small change in the molecule allows the drug to last weeks in our bodies rather than the natural version our bodies make, which lasts minutes. Originally used for diabetics and sold under the name Ozempic®. In June 2021, Wegovy, brand name Semaglutide, was FDA approved for weight loss.

FAQs
Semaglutide is a medication used to help with weight loss by mimicking the effects of a hormone called GLP-1. GLP-1 is an incretin hormone that controls appetite and digestion. It helps lower blood sugar by triggering insulin and slowing the pace at which food leaves the stomach, causing you to feel full and reducing your appetite.
Semaglutide is given as a once-a-week injection under the skin (subcutaneously) in the abdomen. It can be taken any time of day, with or without food.
The most common side effects are gastrointestinal, such as nausea, constipation, and vomiting. These effects may be more pronounced when the dose is increased. Other common side effects include stomach pain, indigestion, and bloating.
Several strategies can help reduce the likelihood of experiencing nausea or constipation while taking semaglutide. These include eating small, frequent meals, limiting alcohol consumption, consuming low-fat meals, following a bland diet, and taking ginger, unisom, or vitamin B6. In addition, the semaglutide kit includes a prescription for Zofran (ondansetron), which can be taken as needed for nausea.
Taking semaglutide at a medspa can provide a number of benefits, including personalized dosing and monitoring, support from a healthcare professional, and access to additional weight-loss services, such as nutrition counseling and fitness programs. Additionally, the medspa setting may provide a more comfortable and relaxing environment for receiving the injections.
